Founded on August 1, 1916, the Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park was the 15th national park, and is celebrating its 100th anniversary! The park predates both the Hawaiian statehood which was August 21, 1959, and the National Park Service itself, which turns 100 on August 25. The National Park Service invites visitors to #FindYourPark, and to join in the celebration throughout the month of August with special events across the country, including free admission to all national parks from August 25 – August 28. Here on the Big Island, Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park invites visitors to help celebrate their 100 years of stewardship through conservation, historic preservation, and recreation with special events through the end of the year, striving to perpetuate the protection of the park’s fascinating culture, biology and geology. And to add to the list of amazing Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park experiences, view the Perseid meteor shower there – it's priceless.
Much like the Olympics, ancient Hawaiians enjoyed a wide variety of games that showcased the mental and physical strength of the contestants during the Makahiki season, or harvest festival season. But as the world engages this month on the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio, half marathon runners on the Big Island prepare to compete in the final race of the 2016 Triple Crown Half Marathon Hawai‘i. To achieve the Triple Crown status, runners must participate in the Big Island International Half Marathon which was on March 20, the Kona Half Marathon that was on June 26, and the Rain Forest Runs Half Marathon on August 20 – where medals will be awarded. Join us in celebrating these amazing athletes on Hawaii Island and in Rio!
The Bird of Paradise symbolizes joy through its vibrant, tropical colors, and the ability to travel, due to the flower’s resemblance to Birds-of-Paradise found in eastern Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and eastern Australia. Here on the Big Island of Hawai‘i, this celebration of color and beauty is all around us, and it’s one we hold in great appreciation and share with all our clients. MacArthur Sotheby’s International Realty presents “Art By Mary Spears”, who captures the essence of paradise in her work. To see Mary’s work in person, visit our Waimea office, visit her online gallery, or at the “Exploring Abstraction” show at Henderson Design Group, Mauna Lani Resort now through September 30, featuring collages.
This month we take a look at picturesque hideaways, one on Oahu listed by our friends at List Sotheby's International Realty and one by MacArthur Sotheby's International Realty here on the Big Island of Hawai‘i.
